Naturopathic Medicine is a form of health care that emphasizes the use of prevention and natural therapeutics in order to inspire the body’s natural ability to heal. Identifying the underlying cause of disease vs. symptom management is a primary focus of naturopathic healthcare.
Functional medicine is very similar to naturopathic medicine in that it focuses addressing the underlying causes of disease using a systems-oriented approach. Functional medicine provides a framework that is made to identify and address the root cause imbalances that affect a patient's health.
A functional medicine health coach provides support for clients to achieve their health goals. They work together with the client and often with their doctors to create plans and health goals.
Naturopathic doctors are trained at accredited, four-year, post-graduate naturopathic medical programs. In certain states, they are considered primary-care physicians trained in the art and science of natural medicine. In unlicensed states, such as New York, naturopathic doctors offer adjunct health care to people of all ages, focusing on the integrated use of natural therapies. Naturopathic doctors focus on promoting health and preventive medicine, and addressing the underlying cause(s) of disease.
As a Naturopathic and functional medicine health coach Dr. Waters provides support and guidance for her clients through the lens of her naturopathic training, clinical experience and fuctional medicine health coach training. She listens and then collaborates with her clients to create health goals. This may mean suggestions for additional testing, nutritional and exercise goals, lifestyle plans, etc.
A Functional Medicine–trained health coach is an extremely valuable member of an integrative health care approach. A functional medicine health coach can make a client's protocol more effective and improve patient compliance and outcomes. The Functional Medicine model helps patients make lasting lifestyle changes in diet, exercise, stress reduction, sleep, and other lifestyle factors.
Using a coaching model, Dr. Waters works primarily with women in their reproductive, peri-menopausal and menopausal years. She addresses hormonal imbalances, neurotransmitters, and overall health in women by discussing botanical support, nutrition, vitamin therapy and lifestyle support. Dr. Waters works with conditions such as PMS, PCOS, anxiety and depression, fertility, postpartum, and menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, fatigue and sleep disturbances. She often works with young women to help create goals to restore hormonal balance naturally.
Dr. Waters also works with patients on general wellness plans and preventative care. Please email Dr. Waters with any questions about your health concerns to see if consulting with her would be a good fit.
